Broken String Brings it Home
Wednesday, August 13, 2003
At 3:45 am August the thirteenth, while tuning his signature 1960 Uild Starfire I from the capoed C tuning of "Gestation" to the different open C tuning of "Home is on the Horizon" Josh Cole broke his high E string.
Engineer Nick Joyce raced around the studio desperately looking for a replacement 13 thousandths-of-an-inch gauge string and to both their chagrin(s) could not find one. So in an instant of pure rock & roll defiance Cole said, "Forget it! I'll just use 5 strings!"
Thus did he pluggeth the Uild unto the Marshall amplifier head and proceedeth to rock the residential neighborhood of Joyce's NP Studios into the wee hours of the morning. In so rocking did he nearly distract the early bird from catching the worm and did in fact distract the healthy, wealthy and wise men from their recurrent ritual of early rising.
When questioned about this monumental moment in rock music, Cole replied, "Prithee, what dost thou expect from a guitar that costeth a meagre 10 bucks at a sale of the garage," referring to the incidence of Dr. Dad Cole's purchase of the Uild when it was still known merely as "Guild."
Luckily no animals were harmed in the recording of this song whose guitar tracks were completed as the sun was just reaching the horizon.
